Over 1.18 Crore Palm Seeds Planted Across Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu Volunteers, in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Green Tamil Nadu Mission, District Administrations, and Non-Governmental Organizations, have been successfully executing the “Palm Seed Plantation Mission – 2025” since September 16, 2025 across all districts of Tamil Nadu.

As of today, more than 1 crore 18 lakh (11.8 million) palm seeds have been planted across the state.
Each plantation activity is geo-tagged and photo-verified through the Udhavi App (udhavi.app/panai) to ensure transparency and long-term tracking of planted areas.  This enables field verification and continuous monitoring of sapling growth.  Every participant automatically receives a Government-recognized Digital Certificate issued through the app.

Marina Beach Turns Green with Palmyra Plantations

In partnership with the Greater Chennai Corporation, District Administration, and Green Tamil Nadu Mission, the Tamil Nadu Volunteers organized a mass palm seed plantation drive at Marina Beach (Divyang Wooden Pathway opposite Vivekananda House) on November 2, 2025, at 7:30 AM.

Actors and social activists Aari Arujunan and Aranthangi Nisha, along with Tamil Nadu Volunteers’ Chief Coordinator Hari Krishnan, Coordinator Ramakrishnan, Palm Seed Plantation Mission Chief Coordinator Lenin, Thamizharasan, “Manidham Kaappom” Sandru Kumar, volunteer Anand, members of the “Kuzhalosai” organization, and several other NGO volunteers from Chennai participated in the event. Around 300 volunteers, including families and children, enthusiastically joined and planted palm seeds along the Marina Beach. A total of 5,000 palm seeds were sown across a 250-metre stretch of the beach, creating a beautiful ‘Palmyra Green Pathway’ on both sides of the walkway — symbolizing Tamil Nadu’s commitment to climate resilience and green growth.

The Significance of the Palmyra Tree

The Palmyra Tree (Borassus flabellifer) is the State Tree of Tamil Nadu and a symbol of Tamil heritage, culture, and ecological balance.

Environmental and Economic Benefits:
Acts as a natural groundwater preserver, Prevents coastal soil erosion, Every part of the tree — leaves, fibre, sap, jaggery, and timber — serves human use, Thrives in drought-prone regions, Lives for over 100 years, ensuring long-term ecological stability, Absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, mitigating climate change

As the ancient Tamil proverb says:
“Neerindri Amaiyadhu Ulagu” — “The world cannot exist without water.”
The Palmyra tree safeguards this truth by protecting water, soil, and life.

Towards the 33% Green Cover Goal – Green Tamil Nadu Mission

The Government of Tamil Nadu aims to increase the state’s green cover to 33%, and the Palmyra tree stands as a vital natural solution to achieve this vision.
By planting and preserving Palmyra trees, Tamil Nadu is building a sustainable future that protects soil, water, air, and biodiversity alike.

Message from the Chief Coordinator – Mr. Hari Krishnan N

“The Palmyra tree is not just an environmental symbol; it is a part of Tamil identity and culture.
Each palm seed we plant is a seed of responsibility, a symbol of balance between humanity and nature.
Growing Palmyra trees is not only an ecological act — it is our cultural duty and a gift to the next generation.”

“Growing Palmyra is growing values” — a philosophy for a sustainable and proud Tamil Nadu.
