Mass Plantation Drive across Tamil Nadu on September 27, 2026, on the occasion of World Rivers Day

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Government of Tamil Nadu, Green Tamil Nadu Mission, Tamil Nadu Volunteers, in coordination with the District Administrations, are jointly undertaking the “Tamil Nadu State Tree – Palmyra Seed Plantation Mission 2026” across the State.
The Palmyra, the State Tree of Tamil Nadu, is popularly revered as the “Karpaga Viruksham” (wish-fulfilling tree) for its immense ecological, cultural and livelihood value. The Palmyra is highly drought-resistant and plays an important role in preventing soil erosion, conserving water, supporting groundwater recharge and enhancing biodiversity. It is also closely associated with Tamil Nadu’s traditional culture, heritage and rural livelihoods.
The Mission aims not only to protect and propagate the Palmyra but also to create awareness among the younger generation about the ecological and cultural significance of Tamil Nadu’s State Tree and encourage active public participation in its conservation.
State-wide Mass Plantation – September 27, 2026
The State-wide plantation drive is proposed to commence on September 27, 2026, on the occasion of World Rivers Day, with plantation activities being undertaken simultaneously across all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu with the participation of District Administrations, Government Departments, volunteers, NGOs, educational institutions, environmental groups and the general public.
District-level coordination meetings are being planned with the concerned Government Departments and stakeholders to facilitate seed collection, identify suitable plantation locations, mobilise volunteers and ensure long-term maintenance of plantation sites.
Digital Monitoring through Udhavi App
A key feature of the Mission is the digital monitoring of Palmyra plantations through the Udhavi App.
Every plantation activity will be recorded with photographs and GPS geo-tagging, capturing the exact location of the plantation. This will enable transparent documentation and monitoring of the number of seeds planted, plantation locations, participating individuals and organisations, and support long-term maintenance.
Appeal to the Public
Volunteers, social workers, environmental enthusiasts, Government officials, school and college students, NGOs, educational institutions, public and private sector organisations and members of the public are encouraged to participate in this State-wide Palmyra Seed Plantation Mission.
Participants can register through Udhavi App – udhavi.app/panai and undertake Palmyra seed collection and plantation, with appropriate local guidance and permissions, in suitable locations such as water bodies, lakes, ponds, tanks, riverbanks, canal banks, coastal areas and suitable vacant lands.
Every individual is encouraged to plant a minimum of 10 Palmyra seeds and contribute to this people’s movement to protect and propagate Tamil Nadu’s State Tree.
